Louis Bertonazzi, 91, long -standing legislative from the Milford State

Retirement senator Louis P. Bertonazzi, 91, from Milford, Massachusetts died on May 18, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.

Louis was a resident of Milford for life. He graduated from Milford high school in 1951. He obtained a baccalaureate in Toft University in Medford, Massachusetts in 1955 and a master of the University of Suffolk in Boston, Massachusetts in 1960. Toft University, he served in the American army for two years. At his end, he worked as a world language teacher, guidance advisor and director of advice in the Medway school system, after which he was appointed deputy director of the Massachusetts youth services department by Governor John Volpe.

Before his service in the Massachusetts Legislative Assembly, he was elected for five terms to the board of directors of Milford, acting as president for three. Louis was a member of the House of Representatives of Massachusetts for ten years, where he obtained the distinction of becoming the first president of the health care committee. He was then a member of the Massachusetts Senate for seventeen years, after acting earlier as a post-audit and surveillance committee, as an assistant whip of the minority, then as a majority whip, before finally climbing the post of head of the majority of the Senate. He retired from the Senate, he completed his state service as assistant secretary for health and social services for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As a member of the General Court, Louis wrote major legislation for the Commonwealth which addressed the confinement of health care costs, the reform of driving driving, the certification of emergency medical services, the establishment of cancer registers, ambulance security, public access to doctors’ profiles and the recovery of the dental practice law.

Over the years, he has received many honors and awards. He received the Distinguished Service Award and the key to the University of the Tofts University Alumni Association – its highest distinction. And in an unprecedented tribute, the Central Massachusetts Emergency Systems Corporation devoted and appointed in his honor the “Senator Louis P. Bertonazzi Center for Prehospital Care Training”. As chairman of the Massachusetts CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS Massachusetts commission, he played a decisive role in the delivery of large ships to the port of Boston in 1992. This initiative earned him the governor’s leadership prize for exceptional contributions to tourism, as well as the presidential price for exceptional contributions to the citizenship of the Sons of Italy Massachusetts. The other prices include the “Man of the Year” prize by the company St. Jude and the “I Migliori” prize awarded by the Pirandello Lyceum du Massachusetts. He was also appointed man of the year by his neighborhood group, La Plains Association, and was annual reunion president for many years. In retirement, Louis returned to his roots in Milford and created the Senatrice Foundation Louis P. Bertonazzi. This foundation presents annual awards in the fields of education, culture and citizenship to individuals of the communities he had represented in the Legislative Assembly. This well -received base continues its work today.

He survived his seventy-seven-year-old wife, Barbara (Szymanski) Bertonazzi, Medway, Massachusetts. Theirs was a loving partnership encompassing their whole life. Barbara and Louis are the proud parents of their son, Gregg Bertonazzi, Uxbridge and Wellfleet, Massachusetts, their daughter, Lisa Bertonazzi-Valaouras and her husband, Thomas Valaouras, Milford, Massachusetts, and their son, David Bertonazzi and his wife, Holly Doagren, Massachusetts. These are the extremely proud grandparents of Nicholas Bertonazzi, Uxbridge, Massachusetts, Peter Bertonazzi, Milford, Massachusetts and Griffin Bertonazzi, of Providence, Rhode Island. Louis loved traveling, music and theater.

Child and young adult, he has danced and played in many community productions. He was a passionate sports fan. He spoke five foreign languages. Above all, he liked to spend time with his family in his summer house in Wellfleet, Massachusetts.

A visit will be held at the Funeral House Consigli Ruggerio at 46 Water Street in Milford, Massachusetts on Thursday May 22, 2025 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., the funeral services will take place on Friday May 23, 2025 from 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at the 5 East Main Street, Massachusetts.
