A man is in critical condition after being sucked in an MRI machine when he entered a room where a scan was underway while wearing a metal chain, according to the authorities.
According to investigators, the police responded to a call at 911 for help from Nassau Open MRI on Old Country Road in Westbury around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, it was informed that a 61 -year -old man entered an MRI room where a scan was underway.
They said he was wearing a large metal chain around his neck, causing him into the machine. This said the police, “led to a medical episode”. No other details were immediately provided.
The man was taken to the hospital for treatment. It is not clear if he was patient in the center of MRI at the time of the incident or why he was in the room.
The investigation is underway.
MRI machines use intensely powerful magnets that can draw metallic objects, which makes it dangerous to bring metal of all kinds near the machine. The magnetic field is always lit, and even small objects can turn into projectiles.
Injuries can range from burns and minor cuts to serious injuries. No details were published on the nature of human injuries in Wednesday incident.
