Report: the recruit of the Red Sox can undergo end -of -season surgery

The Boston Red Soxs may have to finish the 2025 season without a young talent up.

Marcelo Mayer made the injured list last month with a wrapped wrist. The 22 -year -old recruit tries to come back for a push in the playoffs, but it is not a final result.

Bob Nighenngale d’USA TODAY reported on Sunday that Mayer’s injury was “more serious” than we were initially thought. He could suffer an end -of -season operation after consulting specialists.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said on Saturday that Mayer would receive an anti-inflammation injection on the wrist. The team hoped that this step could accelerate their return, according to the way it responded to the treatment.

“He really wants to come back, and that’s the route,” said Cora, “we will see how he reacts there, then we will go from there … We have to wait three days to see if it works, then he starts doing baseball activities.”

Mayer made her long -awaited debut at the Red Sox on May 24. He struck .228 / .272 / .402 with four circuits in 44 games.

Just before the injury, Mayer went from the third goal to the second after the return of Alex Bregman. His injury encouraged Cora to give the central defender Ceddanne Rafaela more repetitions in the second row.

Mayer flashed powerful during his first cup of coffee in Large League, and the Red Sox is missing his defense if he cannot come back in the past two months. However, it is far too important for the future of Boston to take risks.
