Apple TV suffers embarrassing outage during ‘Pluribus’ launch

After months of preparation and an omnipresent advertising campaign, Apple’s highly anticipated new show To many debuted on the company’s TV streaming service Thursday night. And the service quickly suffered a major outage in the United States and Canada.
As reported by Bloomberg and others, users began reporting that the service was down around 10:30 p.m. ET, shortly after Apple made the first two episodes of the show available for streaming. There were nearly 13,000 reports on Downdetector before Apple acknowledged the problem on its System Status page. Reports indicate the outage was brief, lasting less than an hour.
At the time of writing this page has gone completely green again. But there remains a resolved outage note on Apple TV (simply stating “Some users were affected; users experienced an issue with Apple TV” between 10:29 p.m. and 11:38 p.m.), as well as Apple Music and Apple Arcade, which also went down at the same time. Social media reported the outage was widespread.
To many is the work of Vince Gilligan, who created Break the bad And You better call Sauland features Rhea Seehorn from the latter show. This is one of the most high-profile deals on Apple TV, so this outage couldn’t have come at a worse time. It’s unclear exactly what went wrong on a technical level, although it’s possible that Apple’s servers simply weren’t ready to handle the level of demand.
