Lily James, who embodies the founder and CEO of Bumble Whitney Wolfe Herd in the next film “Swiped”, unpacked his decision to go into producer mode for the film, stressing how the inspiring history of technology made him want to be part of his creation.
“When I got on board, there was this very beautiful change of equipment in my career because I also produce on this subject,” James in Thewrap at Thewrap on Monday at the Toronto International Film Festival. James previously had EP’D in the television series, but “Swiped” marks the first feature film she produced.
“I really wanted to be part of this film and the narration, since it is Whitney – one of our big entrepreneurs of his generation and his time,” continued James. “I wanted to somehow being part of the DNA of this project. So, I could brilliantly produce and work on the script and get on board this early stage. ”
“Swiped”, directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg, is a biographical drama on the herd and his trip to launch the Tinder and Bumble dating applications. He features James, Dermot Mulroney, Dan Stevens, Clea Duvall and more.
Regarding what was most important for her in terms of production, James said “each party”.
“Each musical choice, everyone in the crew, the casting, all these kinds of decisions, of which I was happy to be part, was so galvanizing for me,” she said. “And to have an agency and rely on the truly experienced people we worked with … In terms of narration, I was fighting for everything I thought. It is always victories and losses and compromises in making a film and it is better for that. It was quite delicious.”
In addition to the achievements of the herd, the film will also highlight the unique challenges it has been confronted as a woman to try to create a business in an industry dominated by men and the experiences that many women face when using meeting applications to meet a partner.
“It explores very great themes, gender equity and gender and online and disorderly policy dynamics,” said James. “How women are silenced, the many ways that women have been silenced. So I felt a huge sense of responsibility and present myself completely with an open heart to really explore these problems and, hopefully, offer something that the public can then experience and make their own decisions and decide how they feel. ”
She added: “I hope it can inspire and galvanize many people, women, to continue what they want and to believe and to recognize that sometimes these things that have the impression of destroying us, or the darkest moments of our life, can actually be used for something good and powerful.”
“Swiped” made his debut in Tiff and Lands on Hulu on September 19.
