Liam Neeson’s $23M Replacement for ‘Sicario’ Takes Top Spot on Global Streaming Charts

Liam Neeson has been one of the world’s biggest action stars for years, and just a few years ago he tested his mettle in a neo-Western action thriller that’s taking over Netflix’s streaming charts. Four years ago, Neeson headlined The sniperthe 2021 contemporary western that follows a rancher on the Arizona border who becomes the guardian of a young boy fleeing cartel assassins. The sniper began streaming on Netflix last weekend, and it took no time for the film to grab the top spot on the streaming charts, beating even Guillermo del Torothe last film of, Frankenstein.
The sniper has a production budget of approximately $23 million, which is exactly the amount of the film’s worldwide box office revenue. Recovering its production budget was not enough to make the film a financial success, however, as studios typically split ticket sales with theaters 50/50. The Neo-Western was also panned by critics upon release, leading to a rotten 37% from reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience nevertheless appreciated the film. It sits at a solid 83% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, based on over 1,000 verified reviews. The film has also drawn comparisons to Taylor SheridanIt is Sicarius upon its release.
For Neeson, The sniper arrived the same year he first played Mike McCann in The ice roadthe classic action thriller that became one of Neeson’s most popular films in recent years. He quietly released a sequel to the film earlier this year, which was released directly to streaming and became a huge hit on Prime Video and Netflix. Neeson recently starred in one of the biggest comedies of recent years, The naked gunalongside Pamela Anderson And Paul Walter Hauser.
Will Taylor Sheridan make another ‘Sicario’ movie?
Earlier this year, Sicarius star Josh Brolin confirmed that Taylor Sheridan is writing the screenplay for a third Sicarius movie. Sheridan has yet to announce this himself, nor does the film have a place on the release schedule. Sheridan does, however, have other films in the works, such as FASThis next neo-Western drug thriller, with Jason Clarke And Brandon Sklenar. The film will be released in theaters on April 23, 2027. He was also asked to write the Call of Duty film in development at Paramount, with his long-time collaborator Pierre Berg direction.
