Levy’s worst error was to delete “genius” which is “too good” for spurs

The Daniel Levy era in Tottenham Hotspur ended.

On Thursday, it was confirmed that the 63 -year -old man would resign as an executive president after 25 years in charge, the property believing that the change was necessary to bring greater sporting success.

Appointed in March 2001, Levy was the oldest president in the history of the Premier League and a figure of division throughout his mandate.

Regularly the subject of supporters’ demonstrations, its reputation was divided between financial prudence and an inability to translate the infrastructure into silverware.

The last months of Levy have brought a rare high and an equally austere low. The Spurs won the Europa League in May, ending a 17 -year expectation for a trophy.

However, the triumph was supported by a disastrous league campaign which saw them finishing 17th in the Premier League.

We will nevertheless remember him for having delivered the Tottenham Hotspur stadium of 1 billion pounds sterling, a versatile place that has transformed the club’s commercial income.

Inheriting games, concerts and boxing events from the NFL, the stadium has become a global landmark.

In the field, however, Levy management decisions have often defined the fortune of spurs more than infrastructure could never.

The summer of expenses, with marquee signatures like Mohamed Kudus and Xavi Simons, alluded to the ambition, although Spurs failed Ebelechi Eze to Rival Arsenal.

Vinai Venkatesham, appointed director general in April, must now take the reins and implement a new vision while the levy replacement search is underway.

Angel and the many managers of Levy spurs

Few presidents hired and dismissed as many notable managers as Levy.

Angel Postcoglou, sometimes adored by supporters for his daring attacking football, was the last victim.

Delivered just a few weeks after raising the Europa League, its dismissal came in the middle of the League defeats – 22 high -flying defeats in 2024/25 – highlighting Levy’s reputation for ruthless decision -making.

Thomas Frank has since arrived from Brentford to stabilize the ship. The departure of PostCoglou was far from the only ax of Levy.

José Mourinho was only dismissed a week before the Spurs made facing Manchester City during the Carabao 2021 Cup final, a move that has confused many supporters.

Ryan Mason intervened as a goalkeeper’s manager, but Spurs finally lost the final.

Antonio Conte’s short but fuel mandate saw him openly question the mentality of his players, although he guided them towards the qualification in the Champions League in 2021/22.

Levy also experienced Nuno Espírito Santo, a project that died in a few months, and was also known to turn to well -known characters like Harry Redknapp and Tim Sherwood in the past.

However, a name has defined the spurs of Levy more than any other, both in the success and in the bitterness of his departure.

Sackeing Pochettino was the biggest mist in Levy

The time of Mauricio Pochettino in northern London has been transformer.

Appointed in May 2014 as a tenth director of Spurs in just 12 years, he brought stability, style and belief.

More than five years, he fed talents like Harry Kane and Dele Alli, built an fearless team around high pressure and rapid transitions, and took the spurs of the glory that they had not been for decades.

The pinnacle arrived in 2019 when the Spurs reached the final of the Champions League.

Their race included an unforgettable return to the semi-finals against Ajax, crowned by the strike of the Houra Trip de Lucas Moura.

Although they fell 2-0 in Liverpool in Madrid, it was a decisive achievement.

In the League, the Pochettino team finished second in 2016/17 with 86 points – their best arrival since 1963 – only seven points behind the Chelsea champions.

And yet, just a few months after this final of the Champions League, Levy made its most sadly famous call. With the Spurs who struggle at the start of the 2019/20 season, Pochettino was dismissed.

It was an even more brutal decision than that which ended the reign of Postcoglou. As journalist Alex Keble described it, Pochettino was a “genius” and a “very rare example of a manager being really too good for a club”.

The Argentinian later admitted that he was shocked by the departure of Levy this week, emotionally reflecting their “very good” relationship.

After leaving the Spurs, he managed PSG then Chelsea, before taking charge of the American national male team.

His tactical philosophy remains coherent: a 4-2-3-1 built on pressures, playing from the back and stifling opponents with relentless energy.

Pochettino gave Spurs an identity that transported them to the edge of grandeur. Levy’s decision to dismiss him for months after their greatest modern success has left scars that undoubtedly linger to date.

We do not know where the Spurs from here, but they undoubtedly have the commercial base to become something brand new.
