Levothyroxine and caffeine

Levothyroxine is one of the most commonly prescribed thyroid drugs, used to replace or complete hormones that a healthy thyroid produces naturally. Caffeine is a substance widely available in coffee, tea, soft drinks and chocolate. Like many other drugs and drugs, caffeine interferes with your body’s ability to occupy levothyroxine. You can always eat and drink foods containing caffeine as long as you precisely follow your doctor’s instructions for the dosage of levothyroxine and avoid caffeine at the same time.

Levothyroxine

Levothyroxine, also called T4 hormone or thyroid, is sold under brand names such as Synthroid, Levoxyl and Unithroid. Doctors prescribe this medication for patients whose thyroids do not make enough quantities of hormone or who have made their thyroids removed due to a disease or cancer. The drug is generally taken every day and is generally necessary for life.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a substance with a bitter taste found in all unspecified cafes as well as many teas, sports drinks and carbonated drinks. Caffeine is an ingredient in certain pain drugs, including maximum ancacine resistance and additional Excedin. Chocolate also contains caffeine, although a smaller measure. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system and can help you stay vigilant. Too much caffeine, however, has deleterious effects and can cause irritability, insomnia and abnormal heart rhythms.

Interaction of levothyroxine and caffeine

A study described in “Clinical thyroidology for patients” reported that coffee, if consumed at the same time as or slightly after swallowing levothyroxine, interferes with the good absorption of levothyroxine. In particular, patients with little or no natural thyroid function are the most likely to suffer from the deleterious effects of the malabsorption of levothyroxine. Since they can produce little or no natural thyroid hormones, their body is unable to compensate for the decrease in the quantities of levothyroxine.
