Lakers star LeBron James out for 3-4 weeks due to sciatica

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, who has yet to participate in training camp, will be out an additional 3 to 4 weeks with sciatica in his right side, the team announced Thursday.

James, 40, missed the Lakers’ first two preseason games and has yet to participate in a full practice because of what Lakers coach JJ Redick described as a nerve irritation in his gluteal area.

Sciatica is pain that begins in the spine and radiates down the back of the leg.

When asked about the progress of James’ injury on Thursday, before the Lakers released the sciatica diagnosis, Redick said James was “on his own timeline.”

If James continues to be out for 3-4 weeks, he will miss the Lakers’ home opener against the Golden State Warriors on October 21.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported this week that James would likely miss the entire preseason, but was targeting opening night for his return to action.
