Daily update of Laguna Wildfire

Location: Located in the Coyote Ranger district, 8 miles north of the New Mexico 96 road and west of the Chama River Canyon Wilderness.

Strengths: The firefighters concentrated their shooting operations south of Laguna Peak, focusing on the east side of Forest Road 8 to Forest Road 8KD. They finished both an air shot and by hand along the remaining northern control line. To perform a shooting operation, the firefighters cut the vegetation to make a bare floor line before a fire, then using air and hand overhangs burn the vegetation between this line and the actively burning fire front.

Weather report: The showers and storms should develop in the powder trail region on Sunday afternoon and move slowly to the south. However, significant precipitation is not planned. There may be winds of descent, with gusts potentially exceeding 40 MPH. The humidity levels are likely to recover better Sunday evening compared to the previous night. Monday, expect greater storm blankets, as well as strong winds and some wet precipitation.

Smoke: Hot temperatures and continuous smoke are expected in the Rio Chama valley and the communities along the NM State Highway 96 from Regina to Abiquiu. The winds will continue to push smoke to the east of the forest trail during the day, but the light winds on the surface will slow down any clearing of smoke today. Smoke could reach unhealthy for sensitive groups Air quality in areas between forest fire and abiquiu on Sunday afternoon. Smoke should settle in low areas below the fire tonight, including the Rio Chama River Valley and in communities along the NM State Highway 96 where concentrations could reach unhealthy levels. Smoke will be slow to clean on the surface tomorrow morning due to light winds. If you are sensitive to smoke, learn to protect yourself from smoke.

Security: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the highest priority. Please avoid the area while crews manage Laguna forest fire. Drones and fire -fighting planes are a dangerous mixture and could cause accidents or slow down forest fire operations. If you fly, we can’t.

Closures: : The closure order 03-10-01-25-08 is in place and includes all the land, roads and trails of the national forest system in the canton 24n Range 1st sections 1,2,11,12,13,14,23,24,25,26 and canton 24 nations 2nd sections 4-9 and sections14-32 and canton 25n range 1st section 30-32 New Mexico meridian in the Coyote Ranger district. The purpose of this order is to protect public health and security during fire fighting operations for Laguna forest fires. See the attached card for the closing area.
