“ With Hasan in Gaza ‘Locarno Trailer Film: “Homage to Gaza, People”

The images speak stronger than words, they say. A trailer for With Hasan in Gaza of the Palestinian filmmaker Kamal Aljafari (A confidence film,, Memory,, An unusual summer), which will be presented worldwide in the programming of the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival on August 7, remains by this saying.
Below, THR Can exclusively reveal the first trailer for the film before the Swiss festival, which takes place from August 6 to 16.
“Three recordings of Minidv’s life in Gaza from 2001 were recently rediscovered,” reads a synopsis of the film on the Locarno festival website. “What started as a search for a former 1989 prison companion led to an unexpected road trip from north to the south of Gaza with Hasan, a local guide whose fate remains unknown.”
The summary also promises “a cinematographic reflection on memory, the loss and the passage of time, capturing a Gaza of the past and the lives which might never be found.”
Aljafari, in a director’s note, describes the film as “a tribute to Gaza and its inhabitants, to everything that has been erased and which came to me in this urgent moment of Palestinian or non-existence.” And he underlines: “It’s a film on disaster and poetry that resists.”
The film was produced by the filmmaker through his Kamal Aljafari Productions, with the support of the Doha Film Institute, CNAP – Image / Movent, The Gwaertler Stiftung, Le Columbia Institute for Ideas and Imagination, Media City Film Festival’s Chrysis Fellowship and Atelier 105 – Light Cone.

The trailer of With Hasan in Gaza Now gives a first overview of some of the images captured during this trip through Gaza, including children who approach the camera and a journey along the coast.
“I went to Gaza 24 years ago in search of a friend, without address,” explains the filmmaker. “This is my first film, which I have never made.”
