Spanish police say Diogo Jota probably accelerated behind the wheel before the fatal accident

Police investigating the tragic motorway accident that claimed the life of the Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota believes that the Liverpool star was driving at the time – and could have accelerated.

Jota, 28, died alongside her younger brother Andre Silva, 25, when their Lamborghini crashed on a highway in the Spanish province of Zamora in the first hours of last Thursday.

The first reports suggest that the car may have undergone an eruption of the tires while exceeding on the A52 near Palacios de Sanabria, which makes it turn from the road and set fire.

According to Spain Guardia Civil, evidence indicates excessive speed playing a role in the deadly incident.

“Everything also indicates possible excessive speed beyond the road speed limit [highway]”Said the traffic authorities in Zamora.

Investigators analyzed tire brands found a certain distance from the impact site. Based on these brands, the police said: “All the tests carried out so far indicate that the driver of the crushed vehicle was Diogo Jota.”

The vehicle was almost completely destroyed by the fire, which makes the forensic analysis more complex. A full expert report is currently being prepared for a judicial examination.

The accident occurred only 11 days after Jota married her longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, in Portugal. The couple had three children together. The two brothers would have been on the way to the port city of Santander, where Jota planned to start his return to Liverpool for a pre-season training.

The funeral of Jota and his brother took place this weekend in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto.

While some reports had raised concerns about redoing an unequal road in the area where the accident occurred, the police told Spanish media that the location was not classified as a “high -risk black point and should have been sailing in complete safety even at speeds higher than 120 km / h (75 MPH).

The tire marks would have extended approximately 100 meters (330 feet) before the accident site, offering the police an additional overview of the incident.
