Sports films are a delicate territory, deployed at will, each time a director or a studio director is looking for a quick attraction on the hearts. The history of the oppressed is generally sufficient to distract from the feeling of wild unrealistic that exists in dialogue and most certainly the capacity for play.
There were of course some exceptions to this rule. The fighter Originally delivered according to its narrative tenderness, focusing on a unique history of the human condition in the sports field as opposed to a story marked with a team surmounting defeat. While more recent takes as Challenge sought to tell the stories of relationships in sport, and once again provided a much more unique perspective on its chosen discipline.
Then there are some who look at the outright non-recorded of the scenarios and, in turn, provide sports with a new cult hero. Maybe the biggest example of this methodology may be HAPPY GILMORE. He follows a classic oppressed scenario and offers a typical Adam Sandler style overhanging, but in the end, he knows how ridiculous it is. Gilmore wins a tournament by playing with a hockey stick putter and making it fall into the hole of certain scaffolding nearby. It is so obviously absurd that you cannot prevent yourself from loving Gilmore, even if his 20-year sequel underlaces in almost every sense of cinema.
Perhaps one of the best in recent memory is Money. The adaptation of Michael Lewis’s book gave us not only brilliant performances of Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, but focused on an otherwise obscure tale. He used the complexities of a sport like baseball to tell a story of strategy and bureaucracy, while giving us this narrative arch full of hope that we seem to have a good sports film.
It is probably the best baseball film in the story, that Kevin Costner will be devastated, since he has so proudly played in a film entitled For the love of the game. The intrigue was not revolutionary. Costner plays a baseball legend at the twilight of his career, faced with a last occasion of glory while trying simultaneously to win the heart of his romantic interest.
And guess what, he realizes these two things. Can you believe it? Yes, I know you can. It is not exactly a shock, but what is is the fact that Costner holds it in such esteem in all his filmography.
“I had the pleasure of playing in certain films that people continue to talk about, so it’s always really fun. Of course, it is not as if Costner had the filmography of a Daniel Day-Lewis, and therefore has an overwhelming choice. But he was a man who played in Dance with wolves And JFK. I guess he is like the rest of us, however, desperate to live the life of an athletic superstar and so much milked the little opportunity he had.
