The new Yellowstone spin-off may have just confirmed the fate of this forgotten Dutton

From Yellow stone concluded last year, leaving audiences wondering what would become of the Dutton family. Of course, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) had been buried six feet underground, but Kayce (Luke Grimes) was of particular interest to those who felt his journey had finally begun in these final episodes of the neo-Western drama. When a spinoff was announced, fans flocked to the idea, and after waiting a while for CBS to release footage from the upcoming Y: marshalsthe official trailer was recently released – and in its first moments, it reveals something we’ve long suspected.
Has CBS confirmed Monica Dutton’s death in the new ‘Y: Marshals’ trailer?
The trailer begins with a few shots that show the East Camp of the land that was once the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, land that Kayce and his family reserved for themselves following the events of Yellow stonethe series finale. While this all sounds somewhat familiar, Kayce’s dialogue layered over the setting is particularly notable. He talks about losing his teammates (probably his fellow SEALs while fighting overseas), his parents, and even his brothers, emphasizing both Lee (Dave Annable) and Jamie (Wes Bentley) from the original series. But what is particularly telling about what we saw Y: marshals for now this is it we see Kayce kneeling next to a previously unknown gravewhich looks nothing like what we saw of the Dutton cemetery where his father was buried Yellow stone. From what we can tell, it appears to be on Kayce’s land, possibly implying that his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) passed between “Life Is a Promise” and the Y: marshals first. This seems very likely, given that she doesn’t appear in the trailer, and Asbille has not yet been confirmed to appear.
Considering we see both Kayce and Monica’s son Tate (Brecken Merrill), who really looks grown up, and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) in this trailer – which makes sense given that both have been confirmed as series regulars – and there are no additional references to Monica, it appears Kayce’s wife is no more. At the end, This could be the best catalyst for the former Navy SEAL-turned-cowboy to change careers and become a lawman patrolling the last best place. Kayce’s former SEAL buddy and current US Marshal Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) later notes that although Montana looks like God’s own country, it is the Devil who seems to rule it. Perhaps weighed down by the grief of losing most of his family, including his wife, Kayce instead decides to fight for the lives of those around him, taking on the role many of us believed he would play after the second half of Yellow stone Season 5. It’s been a long time coming, and what better way to spark a career change as drastic as Monica’s death?
From “Yellowstone” to “Landman,” Taylor Sheridan built the modern Western television empire, but has his iconic style become a trap?
Is the neo-Western king losing his advantage?
Of course, it’s still possible that Monica was written off in another way. The trailer focuses heavily on the other people Kayce has already lost in her life, so maybe Taylor Sheridan and society will choose to offer him a happier ending, with Y: marshals be written around Monica’s appearances rather than killing her outright. Perhaps the grave is actually Jamie’s, since it is impossible that Beth (Kelly Reilly) would let him be buried next to their father. That doesn’t seem particularly likely, but perhaps the door remains open for Kelsey Asbille to return down the road. Anyway, Y: marshals won’t premiere until March, so we have some time before we receive another confirmation. But it’s worth noting that this is the most we’ve seen of the series so far, and since the CBS show hasn’t shown Monica in any form, it appears Kayce is wandering through life alone. Well, until he joined the Marshals, of course.
“Y: Marshals” goes in a different direction from the rest of the Yellowstone universe
Any way you slice it, Y: marshals aims to carve out a different slice of the Yellowstone universe compared to previous installments. While 1883 And 1923 each focuses on the Duttons as they build their eventual cattle empire, showing the origins of the family brand, Y: marshals is rather an extended epilogue that seems to be more in line with modern neo-Western agendas like Longmire, Justified, WalkerOr Joe Pickett. Unlike some of the other proposed spin-offs, like The Madison, 6666or the series centered on Beth and Rip, Dutton Ranch, Y: marshals is making its mark on network television rather than strictly streamingCBS airing the drama before sending it to Paramount+ with the rest of Sheridan’s collection. It looks like Kayce and the US Marshals will take on everything, including “gangs, cartels and racial warriors”, all hiding in Big Sky Country. If you expected Y: marshals be similar to Yellow stone in style and substance it may feature some of the same characters, but it strives to establish its own name beyond that “Y” brand.
In the trailer, Rainwater tells Kayce that Duttons are particularly known for their ability to draw blood, emphasizing their “killer instinct.” Nonetheless, he calls Kayce a “protector”, reminding him that he was never a killer like his father or other members of his family were. It is this tension that Kayce will undoubtedly be forced to wrestle with: the violent nature he has so often avoided Yellow stone and his deep desire to protect not only his loved ones, but everyone he encounters. Dutton’s flagship drama has moved away from it with Kayce over the years, but it seems that Y: marshals will revisit what made Kayce such a compelling character in the first place. Given that Yellow stone began with the death of his older brother Lee, Y: marshals the beginning with Monica’s disappearance seems very likely.
Y: marshals will premiere on CBS on March 1, 2026 and will be available to stream the following day on Paramount+. Until then you can review Yellow stone exclusively on Peacock.
