Juno Mak’s Cannes entry, “Sons Of The Neon Night,” sold to Toho-Towa

EXCLUSIVE: Taiwan-based 66cc has closed a sale to Japan for Juno Mak’s Cannes Midnight title Sons of Neon Nightwhich was acquired by major Japanese distributor Toho-Towa.
The Hong Kong crime drama, starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, Sean Lau Ching-wan, Tony Leung Ka-fai and Louis Koo, will hit theaters in Japan in the second quarter of 2026.
The film, which is Mak’s second as a director, received its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last year in the Midnight section and was selected for the Gala section of the Tokyo International Film Festival, where it sparked lively discussions among audiences. The film features an original theme song by the late Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Set in a surreal, snowy version of Hong Kong, the film opens with a shooting in Causeway Bay followed by the death of a pharmaceutical industry tycoon in a hospital bombing. As the tycoon’s son seeks to eliminate the drug trade and build a new drug-free world, a war fueled by blood-related family ties and a power struggle between a drug empire and the authorities begins.

66cc Company (formerly known as Distribution Workshop) previously collaborated with Toho-Towa on Chinese director Cheng Er’s period spy drama. The hidden bladewith Tony Leung Chiu-wai.
Mak previously directed an action horror film in 2013 Rigor of deathwhich he also produced with Japanese horror master Takashi Shimizu.
