In October 2017, the first of season four of Blackish broadcast. The episode, entitled “Juneteenth”, had a musical rotation, which saw the Johnsons attend the school room of their twins which is centered around Columbus Day. However, Dre (Anthony Anderson) is surprised by the inaccurate historical representation in history and Enroll Aloe Blacc to create a song to honor Juneteenth.
Blackish The creator of Kenya Barris said THR The following year that the former ABC leader, Vicki Dummer, had approached him with concerns about the episode, which made the “white public uncomfortable”. Despite this, they advanced with “Juneteenth”, and it became a success.
“I said to myself: ‘Vicki, you mean the episode on how to talk about slavery makes the whites uncomfortable makes the whites uncomfortable? And we laughed at fucking irony, “he said. “We finally showed it and it was a well -received episode, but it was doing her job and it is a network fight.”
The episode was so popular – and before the curve – it was announced in 2018 that a musical based on the episode was in preparation. Barris was to write alongside Peter Saji while Pharrell Williams was attached to writing, producing and composing music, although the adaptation has not yet seen daylight.
In its 2018 history announcing stage production, THRDavid Rooney wrote about the episode, “the subversively funny and double-edged episode has become an instant classic, intelligently connecting the 21st century, the reality of the African-American middle class with the brutal past of the country.”
He and Barris also noted that after the broadcast of the episode, Juneteenth presented himself on Ical d’Apple, even before he became a federal holiday.
