Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert rip Democrats for spelunking during shutdown

The late-night hosts ripped Democrats who split from their own party to join Republicans in ending the government shutdown Monday.
Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers all ripped into the eight dissident purple senators (including one independent) who decided to help broker a deal to complete the longest shutdown in American history.
Stewart opened for Comedy Central’s The daily show wild monologue on the subject: “Tonight’s show will be brought to you by ‘I Can’t Believe It,'” he said. “You had the wind at your back! Electoral victories across the country… Democrats, you sold the whole shutdown not to get what you want, but for the promise of not getting what you want later… This is a world-class collapse of the Democrats… It would be like winning 10 points with three minutes left in a game and still finding a way to miraculously lose it for the fourth time in just a month… This is what the Democrats wasted: a country that is finally recovering Trump’s Jedi mind deceives and says: “No, these are the fucking droids we’re looking for. And instead of pressing on that advantage, the Democrats simply said, ‘Droids? I guess we’re not looking for those droids. But you’ll help us find them later, right?’ They squandered their influence, sapped the enthusiasm of their voters, and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.”
While Colbert was bitching about CBS The late show: “The shutdown may have been long and painful for millions of Americans, but at least it made it possible to do a jack squat.” The comedian pointed the finger at Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., saying she “fell apart like a granola bar in your backpack,” and quoted her constituents asking, “Why can’t you all work together to solve the problems facing this country?” Colbert retorted: “Because the country is run by crazy people. »
And NBC Late at night Host Seth Meyers said, “Polls have consistently shown that voters blame Donald Trump and the Republican Party for the government shutdown. Republicans are fighting with each other over President Mike Johnson’s refusal to produce a health care plan. [and] Americans overwhelmingly support Democrats’ efforts to keep health care costs low. The president’s poll numbers are historically bad. He just got booed at a football game and voters gave Democrats huge victories in Tuesday’s election. So naturally, Senate Democrats looked at all of this and said, “Now is the time to cave.” »
The senators who overturned the question suggested that the shutdown failed to achieve their goals given Republicans’ strong resistance to making major concessions, and that it was meanwhile harming government employees and causing significant travel disruptions — particularly as the Thanksgiving holiday approached.
