Set during the Vietnam War and filmed in Thailand, John Rambo will explore the formative experiences of the United States Special Forces Army man. Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander (Content) is produced from a screenplay by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (The Mauritanian, Black Adam). Noah Centineo (The rookie) is in final talks to play.
“The entire AGBO team, led by Anthony and Joe, are creative innovators bringing the most emotionally satisfying and inventive action storytelling to theaters around the world today,” said Charlotte Koh, executive vice president of acquisitions and co-productions, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “Combining our long-standing partnership with Millennium Media with AGBO’s groundbreaking work and Jalmari’s uniquely visceral directorial talent, we are confident that John Rambo will be a must-see event film for action fans.”
“Rambo is one of the most enduring and iconic figures in action cinema and exploring the origins of this mythology is an incredibly exciting opportunity,” said Angela Russo-Otstot, creative director at AGBO. “Everyone knows that John Rambo is a relentless force of nature, but what truly sets him apart are his principles, his code, his unerring sense of what is right, and his willingness to risk everything to defend him. Jalmari brings the raw action and emotional depth needed to pay homage to this legendary character. We are thrilled to collaborate with our partners at Lionsgate and Millennium to support his vision and introduce Rambo to a new generation.”
AGBO is responsible for a myriad of modern action titles, including the Avengers: Infinity War And Endgame, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, The Gray Man (one of the 10 most watched films of all time on Netflix) and Extraction, one of the best franchises on Netflix of all time.
Production on John Rambo should start in early 2026.
