Jennifer Lopez turned down the film that earned the actress an Oscar nomination

Jennifer Lopez sat down with Howard Stern for his SiriusXM show for a wide-ranging conversation that covered her famous exes, the whirlwind surrounding Bad Bunny’s upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show and his new movie, Kiss of the Spider Woman.
It was a questionable interview that continued to deliver the goods when Stern asked the superstar performer if she had ever turned down a movie role only to regret it later. “Adrian Lyne suggested to me Unfaithful” confirmed Lopez, citing the filmmaker’s steamy 2002 thriller that followed the breakdown of a suburban couple’s marriage when the woman engaged in an adulterous affair. Richard Gere and Diane Lane headlined the couple, with Olivier Martinez playing her lover. Michelle Monaghan also starred in the project from Fox 2000 Pictures and New Regency Productions, which reported $119 million worldwide.
When Stern asked Lopez why she declined, she attributed it to writing. “The script was not good,” she said of the film, written by Alvin Sargent and William Broyles Jr. and based on Claude Chabrol’s original 1969 film. The Unfaithful Wife. But despite the storyline, she added, Lyne “made it great.”
Adding insult to injury, Lane landed a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her work in the film, in a category that also included Nicole Kidman (The hours), Julianne Moore (Far from paradise), Salma Hayek (Frida) and Renée Zellweger (Chicago).
“Is it hard to live with?” Stern asked about Lane’s Oscar nomination, to which she responded, “It’s funny. It haunts me. It haunts me a little bit. It’s like the one I turned down, it was like, ‘Why did you turn down to work with Adrian Lyne?’ What were you thinking?” I didn’t even know what was going through my head at that moment. Who knows what was happening to me at that moment.
At the time, Lopez was juggling a music career with a hot acting career that featured recent releases like 2001’s. The wedding planner with Matthew McConaughey and Angel eyes with Jim Caviezel. At the time Unfaithful came out, she had films such as Enough, maid in Manhattan And Lilythe latter proved to be one of the biggest box office disappointments of his career.
But she may have a chance to shine at the Academy next year, as she’s already generating Oscar buzz for her supporting role in Bill Condon’s film. Kiss of the Spider Woman. See Lopez on Stern below.
