Jennifer Lawrence says male directors sometimes ‘direct’ actors too much

While Jennifer Lawrence said that the process of promoting and releasing a film like Die my love may be “very violent”, it seems that the process of creating such a raw and personal film while pregnant was much less so.
Of the intimate scenes with her on-screen partner Robert Pattinson, she said: “I felt really safe with him. He’s not perverted and he’s very in love with him. [partner] Suki [Waterhouse]. We mostly talked about our children and our relationships.
Lawrence felt the same comfort working with director Lynne Ramsay.
“I found one thing in common among female directors, which is that they don’t do those kinds of things, which are too direct,” the Oscar winner told Vulture. “There have been times when I’ve worked with male directors where there was this need to constantly feel like they were direction the movie. And that doesn’t even do much. It’s just boring. When I think authormy mind kind of turns to control and… what is that word? Neurosis!”
It wasn’t his experience with Die my loveaccording to the actress.
“Lynne was the opposite. She really built this world and made sure we were all on the same page, through the music and the conversations and the atmosphere and the setting. And then she would slowly work her way back. And sometimes, because of the discomfort of that, the lack of visibility, something interesting would come out of it. And then she would come out and say, ‘This is great, great. Yeah, do it again.’ Or we’d accidentally laugh and say, ‘Oh, sorry.’ And she’d say, ‘No, that was great.’ I liked that you laughed. Do it again.’
Deadline’s review calls the film “a brutal but beautiful portrait of a woman on the edge.”
Die my love opened this weekend on 1,983 screens and is eyeing a $2.7 million investment over 3 days. Mubi paid $24 million for the film’s domestic and foreign rights.
