Jason Momoa channels his Hawaiian heritage for the new epic historical drama Warlord.

Corrated by Thomas Pa’ Sibbett and the 45-year-old actor, who also wrote and produced the project, the Apple TV + series with nine episodes is based on real events surrounding the unification of the Hawaiian islands when confronted with colonization from the West to the late 1700s.

In the first trailer published by the streaming platform on Thursday, July 10, Momoa leads the saga as Ka’iana, a venerated warrior and a ferocious protector of his native lands known by “the first of our people”.

“They will come soon,” he said, referring to the arrival of white men, before warning: “If this island is divided, this kingdom will fall.”

The three-minute trailer and full of action then shows what is at stake for the indigenous peoples and the lush and intact islands as they sail on internal conflicts as well as the imminent threat of the colonies.

“We will need him to face the problems that come to us,” explains Kaʻahumanu (Luciane Buchanan, The night agent), who finds himself taken in the saga that takes place, before Ka’iana finished the trailer saying: “Tomorrow, we will face the gods and men to build a kingdom. According to Apple TV +, the chief of the war “is a passionate project for creators Momoa and Sibbett, who share the native Hawaiian heritage”. (Sibbett was also a writer on the actor’s superhero film Aquaman and the lost kingdom.)

As we can see in the prolonged overview, the series is “told in an indigenous perspective”, with the streamer noting that it “presents a distribution with Polynesian predominance”.
