Janelle Monáe says she traveled in the 1970s to see David Bowie in concert: ‘I was backstage’

Janelle Monáe: singer-songwriter, actor, rapper… time traveler?
Maybe. The 39-year-old “Phenomenal” singer, who uses the pronouns she/her and they/them, revealed that her outlook on becoming an artist changed after going back in time and attending a David Bowie concert.
“I think when I saw David Bowie,” Monáe told Lucy Dacus during a recent “Musicians on Musicians” conversation for rolling stone. To which Dacus replied: “Did you see it?

“I did it,” Monáe said. “I traveled in the 1970s and saw him do Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Marsand it was amazing.
Dacus seemed visibly confused by Monáe casually dropping some knowledge about time travel. “You came back…?” » she asked.
“Yeah, I was behind the scenes and I was like, ‘This is what I want to do,’” Monáe said. “So I went back to the 2000s and I was like, ‘I can have the musical, make the music, create the lyrics and create a community around transformation and being queer.’ And not just in sexuality, in the way we see the world.
She continued: “Let’s step outside of the mundane and what people know us to be every day. Leave room for yourself to transform.”
But Monáe is not only linked to the past. THE Glass onion The star also revealed that “I absolutely feel my DNA in the future” as well.
“And Cindi [Mayweather] that’s it,” Monáe said, referring to her android alter ego who took center stage in the 2010 album, The ArchAndroid. “And we help each other.”
Which, honestly, seemed to throw Dacus for a loop once again. “Is Cindi like your future?” she asked.
When Monáe agreed, the Boygenius star simply replied, “Whoa.”
Monáe’s revelation that she can time travel sparked a wide range of responses in the comments section of the TikTok post, with some suggesting she was simply being sarcastic towards others, fully believing she had visited other decades in the past.
“If anyone can do it, it’s Janelle Monae,” one user wrote. Another added: “No it’s true I was backstage with her.”
Others, meanwhile, praised Dacus for his “strong poker face.” Another commenter perhaps put it best when he wrote: “You know what… The world is on fire, let this person travel through time if they want to.” 💀 »
