James Gunn Says ‘We’ll See What Happens’ With SWAMP THING After James Mangold’s Paramount Deal

Filmmaker James Mangold has tackled many genres over the years. From biopics such as Ford vs. Ferrari And A different manto action blockbusters like Logan And Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destinyman has autonomy.

As well as a Star Wars film exploring the origin of the Jedi set 25,000 years ago, DC Studios has chosen Mangold to direct it Swamp Thing. The character starred in a short-lived TV series, but this would mark a big screen return for a character – after the 1982 effort – who fits nicely into the latter part of James Gunn’s “Gods and Monsters” list.

As Waller And The Authority, Swamp Thing it looks like it’s going nowhere fast. It was recently revealed that the filmmaker had signed an overall deal with Paramount Pictures to develop, direct and produce feature film projects. While he supposedly remains committed to his non-Paramount projects, it’s hard to imagine them becoming a priority after signing such a lucrative new deal.

Rolling Stone recently spoke with James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, and asked if Mangold’s partnership with Paramount meant Swamp Thing is “dead”.

"No, no, it’s not. No," THE Superman said Helmer before being asked if he still hopes the film will become a reality. “Yeah, I mean, yeah, totally. Absolutely. Yeah. We’ve talked to him. He’s still invested. So we’ll see. Some things take a long time. We’ll see what happens.”

Swamp Thing He may not be dead, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen anytime soon.

In January, Mangold shared some ideas about his plans for the character. “With Bob [Dylan] you know the quantities, yes, but there are ways to interpret them,” he explained. “With other types of intellectual property, it reaches a religious level. Swamp Thing in DC, it’s just a question of: Do we find a way on the page to say something original?”

“While I’m sure DC considers Swamp Thing a franchise, I would consider it a very simple, stripped-down gothic horror film about this man/monster,” Mangold continued. “I’m just doing my own thing with it, just on my own.”

“I was lucky [to work] in different genres, because people will fund it. If I was just a horror director and people only wanted to pay for my horror films, that would be a different problem.” the director later admitted it. “But part of the joy is that you learn a lot when you change genres or vernaculars in how you communicate in your art.”

“I’ve learned a lot, whether it’s directing an action movie or directing a western and bringing those energies to sort of a superhero movie or a Marvel movie. You not only learn things from creating one genre, but you then learn how to transfer the lessons from that genre into another one that you might not expect.”

Gunn has a plan for the DCU, but it looks like it will mostly play out in projects he’s closely involved in (like the upcoming The man of tomorrow). This leaves room for stand-alone stories, clay face And Swamp Thingfor example, to flesh out this world in different ways.

Swamp Thing will investigate the dark origins of its main character. DC Studios has not announced a release date, and it is unclear whether Mangold plans to begin work on this product or Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi First of all.
