IMAX has shared a preview of the films that will be shown on its giant screens in 2026 and 2027.
In addition to confirming that Supergirl And Avengers: Apocalypse will receive IMAX releases next year, it is revealed that The man of tomorrow (Or, Superman: The Man of Tomorrowas it is called here), The Batman 2And Avengers: Secret Wars will similarly get the IMAX treatment in 2027.
Spider-Man: A Whole New Dayhowever, can be left cold.
Scheduled for release on July 31, 2026, the film is sandwiched between two IMAX releases: that of Christopher Nolan The Odyssey (July 17) and Warner Bros.’ Flowervale Street (August 14). Nolan’s next film playing for a long time in IMAX is not surprising, but a month-long exclusive? It’s already happened.
We’d be shocked if Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios didn’t negotiate with IMAX to free up at least a few screens next summer, but there’s a good chance that Spider-Man: A Whole New Day ultimately bypasses these premium cinemas altogether.
It wouldn’t be the first time this has happened. Earlier this summer there was no room for Renaissance of the Jurassic world in IMAX, and it still grossed $888 million to become one of the highest-grossing titles of the year. Overall, IMAX can help a movie’s box office, but it’s certainly not a big enough factor in deciding whether anyone other than die-hard moviegoers will see a new movie.
Spider-Man: A Whole New Day is guaranteed to be a hit, no matter what screens it is shown on. Anticipation is through the roof, and if what we’re seeing from fans here and on social media is any indication, it might even exceed Avengers: Apocalypse.
On the plus side, Sony managed to secure an IMAX release for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse in 2027.
“It really feels like we’re not making the fourth movie. We’re making the first movie of the next chapter. It’s a rebirth,” Tom Holland, who also stars in The Odysseyrecently teased. “It’s something completely new.”
“I’m really happy that people are picking up on the homage to Tobey and Andrew’s costume. I think the third movie was basically about paying homage to these guys. I really like the idea of him trying to be like his big brothers, looking up to them, and seeing little details on their costumes that he thinks are really cool, and now he’s making his own costume and not being part of this bigger team.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton directs Spider-Man: A Whole New Day from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Tom Holland leads a cast that also includes Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, Tramell Tillman, Marvin Jones III and Liza Colón-Zayas. Love at first sight* star Florence Pugh also joined the cast.
Spider-Man: A Whole New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.
