Did ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ Shockingly Bring Back Selena Gomez Just to Kill Her?

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, Season 2, Episodes 9 and 10.The Disney+ sequel to one of the most iconic teen sitcoms of the 2000s just wrapped up its second season with a finale so intense, so heartbreaking, that it might have surpassed its own nostalgia. When Wizards Beyond Waverly Place First premiering in 2024, few could have predicted just how dark the magical family sitcom would become.
But the Season 2 finale, “The Wizard at the End of the World: Part Two,” takes the franchise to its most emotional place yet — literally. The two-part merger brings together Selena GomezAlex Russo returned for a long-awaited appearance, only to seemingly kill it in a heartbreaking twist that left fans both stunned and skeptical.
Did Alex Russo die in the ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ season 2 finale?
In the finale, Alex sacrifices himself to save his daughter, Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), and his family of the dark wizard Lord Morsus (Tobias Jelinek). During the climactic confrontation, Alex regains his lost memories and remembers casting a spell years ago to erase Billie’s memory of the Russos – a necessary act to protect the daughter from Morsus, who turns out to be both Billie’s grandfather and Alex’s former stepfather. When Morsus forces Billie to open a breach connecting the human world to the dark magic realm, Alex intervenes, dragging him through the portal and sealing him on the other side.
It’s a stunning sacrifice, but one that seems fitting for the wizard who once blurred the line between recklessness and heroism. And even though the scene carries the full weight of a goodbye, fans are already wondering if Alex is really gone. As Gomez sang in the original Wizards of Waverly Place theme, “all is not what it seems”.
Is Alex Russo’s Mom Billie in ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’?
The emotional core of the finale lies in the revelation that Billie is Alex’s daughter – a secret hidden since the start of the spin-off. Years before, Alex had fallen in love with Damian Penwolf, Morsus’ son, and together they had Billie. When Damian turned away from his father’s dark path, Alex erased his family’s memories to keep Billie safe, raising the stakes for his return in Season 2.
Executive producer and returning star David Henriewho plays Justin Russo, said TV line that the ending moved the actors to tears during the table read. “Everyone cried…it was exactly what I hoped for,” he said. Henrie also said there were hidden Easter eggs in the finale that hinted at where Alex was – and what was to come.
Could a season 3 save Alex Russo?
Disney+ has not officially renewed Wizards Beyond Waverly Place for a third season at the time of writing, but the cliffhanger makes cancellation unlikely. Henrie described the finale as “the most cliffhanger season we’ve had in Wizards history,” suggesting that a potential season 3 could follow the Russos and Billie as they try to save Alex from the Dark Realm.
Even though Alex’s fate remains uncertain, Gomez’s limited appearances — just four of the show’s 31 episodes — make each return a small event in itself. Still, as long as there’s magic left in the Russo family, fans can hope that the world’s most mischievous wizard isn’t gone forever.
