Is this horror? The director weighs on the film Netflix

Fans hoping for a frightening and monstrous version of the Mary Shelley classic will have to adjust their expectations.
The legendary director Guillermo del Toro, known for his fantastic horrors as Pan labyrinth And Gothic romance Crimson peakconfirmed his next Netflix adaptation of Frankenstein is definitely not a horror film.
Speaking in a special panel at the Cannes Film Festival alongside composer Alexandre Deplat, Del Toro revealed his surprising perspective. “”Anyone asked me the other day, has really scary scenes?“He said.”For the first time, I thought about it. It’s an emotional story for me. It is as personal as anything. I ask a question about being a father, to be a son … I don’t make a horror film – never. I’m not trying to do that.“”
This declaration marks a significant gap of the genus generally associated with the monstrous creation of Victor Frankenstein. While the filmography of Del Toro often rides the line between fantasy, horror and drama, his Frankenstein seems to be strongly leaning over the emotional and philosophical heart of Shelley’s novel, rather than its potential for fear.
In short, fans should expect something similar to Del Toro The shape of the waterwas inspired by Black lagoon creature.
Echoing the feeling of Del Toro, Alexandre Desplat offered an overview of the film’s sound landscape. “”Guillermo’s cinema is very lyrical, and my music is rather lyrical too“Deplate explained”.So I think that the music of “Frankenstein” will be something very lyrical and emotional … I do not try to write horrible music.“”
Del Toro has also developed their collaborative approach, declaring: “We find emotion. And what I can say is, for me, it’s an incredibly emotional film.“”
The highly anticipated Frankenstein has a convincing distribution, notably Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Moon Knight) as Monster de Victor, Mia Goth (Maxxxine, Pool Infinit Unchained, Inglourious Basterds) as Dr Pretorious, Lars Mikkelsen (The Witcher, Ahsoka) Anderson and Ralph Ineson (The Creator, The Fantastic Four: First Steps) as teacher Kempre.
Netflix should make its debut in November 2025, although an exact date has not yet been announced. Under the visionary direction of Guillermo Del Toro, this adaptation promises to be a fresh and emotionally resonant reimagination of the classic tale.
Inevitably, the version of Del Toro will be stacked against another high -level Frankenstein project arriving a few months later: a written reinterpretation and led by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Her film has an impressive cast, notably Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard and Annette Bening, preparing the field for two distinct cinematographic visions of the legendary monster.
Images of Frankenstein de Del Toro were presented for the first time in a sizzling coil for the Tudum event in Netflix, which is planned for SAT, on May 31, 2025 at 8 p.m. Hne. A complete trailer for the FIM should be released during the world fans event.
What do you think of taking Del Toro? Will you remain the horror elements, or are you excited for a more personal interpretation?
