Ipswich now set to sign £50m ‘electric’ contract

Ipswich Town are making moves to sign a £50million ‘electric’ contract, and they are looking to seal a deal in the January transfer window.

Ipswich now begin to pile the pressure on second-placed Middlesbrough, moving themselves just five points behind their Championship rivals with a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road on Saturday.

As we approach the halfway point of the campaign, the Tractor Boys are in a good position to challenge for promotion, having been particularly impressive up front, scoring 38 league goals, the second most of any team.

Jaden Philogene and Jack Clarke scored 15, showing Kieran McKenna is already blessed with top quality options, but signing another winger is on the to-do list in the January transfer window, and an ambitious target has now been identified.

That’s according to a report from Football Insider, which states that Ipswich are currently making moves to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Brennan Johnson, with the Premier League side considering allowing a winter departure.

There could be competition for Johnson’s signature, however, as Crystal Palace have already expressed interest in the winger, while Brentford have also joined the race, and a permanent deal is likely to be costly.

Indeed, recent reports have indicated that the north Londoners could be holding out for up to £50m, which would obviously be a huge sum for a Championship club to pay, and the Tractor Boys are quite interested in a loan deal in January.

Signing ‘electric’ Johnson would be a major coup for Ipswich

It would be a real coup if Ipswich manage to sign the Welshman, given he has proven he is more than good enough to play for a European club, including scoring the winning goal in the Europa League final against Manchester United last season.

Not only that, but the 24-year-old has also thrived in the Premier League during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring a very respectable 11 goals and five assists in 33 outings.

McKenna has previously admitted he is a fan of the Tottenham ace, saying last season: “He’s certainly having a big impact on the Tottenham team at the moment with his honesty on the ball, his movement to get in behind, his ability to create chances and his movement to score opportunities. He’s very, very good.”

The compliments don’t stop there either, with The Athletic’s Paul Taylor calling the former Nottingham Forest player ‘electric’.

That said, it seems extremely unlikely that Johnson would be willing to give up the Championship, given his talent and the fact that a number of Premier League clubs are also in the race for his signature.
