Kuldeep Yadav ran through the West Indies batting line-up to take five wickets and push India to a dominant position on the third day of the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. The left-arm wrist spinner returned with figures of 5 for 82, which was also his fifth five-wicket haul in Tests, as the visitors were bowled out for 248 in 81.5 overs. With a 270-run lead, India forced the follow-on, leaving West Indies with an uphill task to extend the match into the fourth day. Kuldeep’s spell stood out not only for his control but also for deceiving the opposition batters. Operating adrift on a pitch offering little turn, he dismissed Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach and Justin Greaves with a decisive burst in the morning session, breaking the spine of the West Indian innings. Hope was beaten by a delivery that drifted and past his front defense to hit outside off stump. Imlach soon followed, trapped in front of him by another sharply spinning balloon. Greaves’ reverse sweep attempt against a broken leg also ended in heavyweight, as Kuldeep tightened India’s grip on the contest. Although Khary Pierre and Anderson Phillip showed resilience with a 46-run ninth-wicket stand, Jasprit Bumrah broke through after lunch with a pinpoint delivery that cleaned Pierre out. The final pair of Phillip and Jayden Seales briefly frustrated India, adding 27 runs, before Kuldeep came back to end the innings with a cleverly disguised googly that trapped Seales lbw. This five places Kuldeep level with England’s Johnny Wardle for the most five-wicket hauls by a left-arm wrist bowler in Test history, with five each. South African Paul Adams follows with four. However, Kuldeep reached that number in just 15 Test matches, which is 13 Tests fewer than it took Wardle to do the same.
