‘Incredible’ Man Utd star looks like Amorim’s new Bruno

Manchester United narrowly maintained their invincibility. The Red Devils drew 2-2 against Tottenham Hotspur, and it took a late goal from Matthijs de Ligt to secure the point and extend the unbeaten run to five games.

Indeed, the Dutchman’s goal in the 96th minute was enough to save his team from yet another defeat under Ruben Amorim, although they had previously led in the match.

Bryan Mbeumo scored with a header that put United 1-0 up at half-time.

However, Spurs fought back after a lot of pressure in the second half. First, Mathys Tel shot on goal, his shot pushing away De Ligt’s foot and ending up behind Senne Lammens’ goal.

Richarlison thought he had won in the 91st minute with a smart header, before United’s number four canceled out his goal moments later.

It was a largely uninspiring performance from United. They played an incredibly passive game, happy to let Spurs dominate the ball. In total, Amorim’s team managed just five shots, with the only two on target ending up in the back of the net.

Brands first

Their first scorer, Mbeumo, continued his good form in front of goal.

The Premier League Player of the Month for October is irrelevant in November. Mbeumo was one of the rookies of the season and now has seven goals and assists in just 12 games for the Red Devils.

His strike on Saturday lunchtime against Spurs was one of good centre-forward play and a deft touch.

United’s number 19 stepped between two Lilywhites defenders, before glancing a header into the back of the net.

That wasn’t Mbeumo’s only positive contribution against Spurs, however. He was a constant problem for the opposition defense, making 44 touches and completing three passes into the final third.

The striker was also excellent on the ball and made four recoveries.

Mbeumo

As well as the 26-year-old who played against Spurs, there was a United player who arguably surpassed him.

United’s best player against Spurs

United’s draw against Spurs was certainly frustrating. Amorim criticized his team after the match, explaining that “we should do better, be more aggressive, feel the environment in the stadium, the three points were there”.

However, one player who stood out, like Mbeumo, was Amad. The Ivorian’s role was different from the start today, playing as a number 10 rather than a winger.

However, he was as energetic as usual, posing a threat going forward and working hard defensively.

Amad-2

In fact, it was on a cross from the striker that Mbeumo scored. What a delicious ball it was too. Amad collected the ball just inside the Spurs penalty area, lifting his cross from a standing position towards the back post for his teammate to guide it home.

It was one of two chances he created, on an afternoon where he also played four passes into Spurs’ third goal.

Amad’s excellent performance certainly stood out, with journalist Liam Canning saying it was an “incredible” performance from the Ivorian striker, while hailing him as man of the match.

There’s certainly a case to be made that Amad is becoming the new version of Bruno Fernandes’ Amorim. Often, it was the Portuguese striker who shouldered the creative load at United. However, the situation has been different this season, with the captain’s three assists matched by Amad.

Amad Bruno

One reason for this could be the role in which the United manager uses his skipper. A number 10 by trade, Fernandes now plays deeper in the pivot, and with his number 16 operating high and wide on the wing back or in the pockets as a number 10. He is certainly much more involved in the final third.

This is not a bad thing for United, who have relied solely on Fernandes for too many years. But Amad is certainly taking on more creative responsibilities and is slowly becoming their new version of Fernandes.
