“If I can play the Duleep trophy, why not T20?” Mohammed Shami breaks on the snob of the Cup in Asia
Shami played 2 T20is against England earlier in the year, taking 3 counters. But his IPL 2025 was not up to the task and he was even abandoned by SRH.
Mohammed Shami spoke of his non-selection in the India team for the Asian Cup. The Cricket Control Council in India (BCCI) announced a team of 15 members with 5 reserves on August 19, but Shami was not part either.
The Pacer is an interpreter known in ICC events. During the ODI 2023 World Cup, Shami took 24 counters in 7 rounds, while he was the largest counter in India in the Champions Trophy 2025. But the selector did not think that a place was justified for him.
Shami, fit for the Asian Cup
Some assumed that Shami was perhaps not finished in shape for the Asian Cup. But the Pacer will play in the Duleep trophy, from August 28. The veteran Fast Bowler underlined this, he is available for all tournaments. But the selection is not in his hands.
“I don’t blame anyone for non-selection or I complain. If I’m right for the team, select me; If I am not, then I have no problem with that. Selectors are responsible for doing what is best for Team India. I believe in my abilities that if and when I have an opportunity, I will not give better. Shami told News24 Sports.
No hope for the return of India
In the current state of things, Shami is not confirmed to represent India in a format. Yes, he took 9 counters in 5 games in the Champions trophy but never watched near the 2023 level he showed. Its performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, 6 counters at 56.16 and 11.23 savings was lower than the average.
The selectors did not select it either for the test tour in India in England, because his body was not ready. Shami does not have great hopes either. He says that it is entirely up to the selectors. If they feel that he can play, they will choose it. Shami confirmed that he had cleaned all the fitness tests.
“Right now, I have no hope (about my international return). If they play me, I will try to play and give my 100%. Whether they play me or not, it is not in my hands. If I play the Duleep trophy, 5 days of cricket, I am available for all formats. I was called to Bengaluru, and I erased the fitness test (Bronco), and now I’m ready to go back, “ Shami added.
