“I am not going to judge Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after every ODI”

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had not played for India since March and their last competitive match was in June.

Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar has been under fire ever since he said Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are not committed to playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The modern greats not only have a huge fan base but even current and former cricketers look up to them.

This is why Agarkar’s statement regarding Rohit and Kohli has irked some. He was asked about their future again, just two days before the start of the India vs Australia ODI series in Perth. But the former Indian all-rounder maintained this stance.

Rohit-Kohli has nothing to prove

He simply stated that you cannot predict the future. It’s not just about Rohit or Kohli, but maybe some young players are not being considered for the ODI World Cup. Agarkar reassured everyone that the two former Indian captains will not be judged after every match and will be treated with the respect they have earned over the last fifteen years.

“They have been incredible players for a long time. But, in two years, we don’t know what the situation will be. Why only them? Some other young players might not play.

I mean, it’ll be a bit silly, right? (On them proving their place one after the other) When guys have done it, one has an average over 50 and the other close to 50. You’re not going to put them to the test after every game. Agarkar said at the NDTV Global Summit 2025.

Agarkar pointed out that Rohit and Kohli now play only one format and have not played any international cricket for over six months. Of course, all of this will be taken into account. He reassured everyone that their performance in the India vs Australia ODI series will not determine their future in two years’ time.

“2027 is far away, and both are playing only one format. They are playing (international) cricket after March 9. They haven’t had much cricket. Once they start playing, you evaluate. They have achieved everything they set out to achieve, not only winning trophies but also running.

It’s not that if they both don’t get runs in this series, that will be the reason why they won’t be there, or if they get three hundreds, that will be the reason why they will play the 2027 ODI World Cup. We will see how the team forms. But we have some ideas, and as we go along, we’ll probably have a better idea of how the team is progressing. Agarkar added.
