Hundreds oppose Haleiwa Housing Project

HALEIWA (Hawaiinewsnow) – From the start, many members of the community expressed opposition to the development of Haleiwa back -cours, which consists in building around 150 long -term rentals of two long -term rooms on the empty ground behind the ACE hardware.
“I think this project writes people. Nothing about this is for our community. He will simply get worse, especially with all the infrastructures that have already settled, “said Zaz Dahlin, a resident in the region.
The rent for the units would be between $ 2,500 and $ 3,800 per month, and around a third of the houses would be affordable.
“I know that the backbone of our community is essentially rescuers, teachers, catering employees, retail workers. And I know they do near the amount to pay what they offer here, ”added Zaz Dahlin.
Residents fear that more new houses can add more new vehicles to the region, which means more traffic in an already congested tourist hot spot.
“Our traffic in the country here in Haleiwa, on 1.5 mile, is a crazy house,” said Earl Dahlin, a resident in the region. “We get traffic, takes you 20 minutes just to cross the city.”
Jack Reid, a resident of Waialua, agreed with Earl Dahlin, adding: “I don’t come to town. I live the WaiALUA side. I don’t come to this city after 10 a.m.
But the developer DG “Andy” Anderson said that houses could go to workers in the region who could walk to work instead of driving, which, according to him, could lead to less cars to take the road, reducing traffic.
Anderson added that there should be more accommodation to keep local families here in Hawaii.
The Honolulu municipal council is expected to discuss the project on Monday.
