Hugo Spriz recipe – Love and lemons

I love to sip a Hugo Spriz by a hot day! Made with prosecco, elderflower liquor and fresh mint, this Italian cocktail is floral and refreshing.
Have you ever tried a Hugo Spriz? This Italian cocktail is sparkling and brilliant, with floral notes of the elderflower liquor and depth based on fresh mint plants. It is just as refreshing as Spritz Aperol, his better known cousin, but he has no bitterness of Aperol. Instead, it is slightly soft and delicate.
This is one of my favorite cocktails to sip a hot summer day – always on a patio, and preferably in Italy … Although more likely in my own courtyard. Fortunately, this recipe Hugo Spriz is easy to make with 5 ingredients, so it could not be easier to mix at home.
What is a Hugo Spriz?
A Hugo Spriz is a foamy wine cocktail made from prosecco, elderflower liqueur, club soda and fresh mint. It is generally garnished with more mint and a corner of lemon or lime.
This is a relatively new addition to the classic cocktail barrel. The Hugo Spriz was created in the Southern Tyrol region of northern Italy in 2005 by the bartender Roland Gruber.
Hugo Spriz ingredients
Here is what you need to make this Hugo Spriz recipe:
- Prosecco – Although you can use another sparkling wine like Cava or Champagne here, Prosecco is the most common choice. Funny fact: Prosecco is produced in the region of Veneto in Italy, which borders the Tyrol Sud region where this cocktail was created!
- Elderflower liquor – He adds soft floral notes to Spritz. St-Germain is the most widely available, but you can use any elderflower liqueur or cordial elderflower here. You can even submit an elderflower syrup for a lower ABV drink.
- sparkling water – He adds additional bubbles and balances wine and liqueur.
- Fresh mint – You will add to the drink and use more for the garnish.
- A lemon or lime slice – For the garnish. It gives the cocktail a shiny and agricultural finish.

How to make a Hugo Spriz
The Hugo Spriz belongs to the Spritz family of cocktails, which generally has a 3: 2: 1 sparkling wine, liqueur and soda of the club.
In fact, I prefer a slightly different report in a Hugo Spriz, becoming heavier on prosecco and lighter on the liquor. I love this balance of flavors, but do not hesitate to play with the ratios of this recipe to create a balance that you like.
Here’s how you will:
- Start by confusing the mint. Place a touch of mint in a large wine glass and add the elderflower liqueur. Closure gently, then let the mixture stand for a few minutes to infuse.
- Fill the glass with ice and garnish it with prosecco and soda water. Stir gently to combine.
- Garnish with cooler mint leaves and a lemon or lime wheel. Appreciate!
Variation: St-Germain Spriz
A Spritz St-Germain is essentially a simplified version of a Hugo Spriz. It consists of prosecco, the liquor of elderflower and soda of the club. Just jump the mint and lime in this recipe, and you will have a Spritz St-Germain! I love a touch of lemon for the garnish.
(The traditional report for a Spritz St-Germain is 1.5 parts of the St-Germain to 2 prosecco parts to 2 parts of soda water-without adapting as you wish!)
