Lake Natron: where incredibly salty water corresponds to the flamingos

Despite its forbidden nature, Lake Natron attracts thousands of inferior flamingos during the breeding season. The salt water of the lake and chemical makeup discourage predators, creating a relatively safe breeding ground.

With few other animals capable of tolerating the environment, more nests survive, helping to support the fragile population of the species across Africa.

Other birds visit or live in the surroundings of the lake, including those on the way between Lake Manyara and Serengeti National Park or further south towards the Ngorongoro conservation area and the Ngorongoro crater.

This convergence makes the lake a crucial knot in the network of national parks in East Africa.
