How the HBO drama created the Duke’s succession

Gladys deserves the mother of all the castles after the test she went through in New York. But the production did not need to go to England to find the perfect house for the new Duchess of Buckingham.

Two different areas in Newport, RI – with one at Long Island – served as Sidmouth castle in the episode entitled “A different world”. To make the opening blow, however, the director Deborah Kampmeier relied on a real pond in England to project the image of Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) and Hector (Ben Lamb) on a car through the field of the succession.

“We put the visual effect of the car upside down in the water, then the wide blow moving through the countryside. It is England,” said Kampmeier. “And then as the castle approaches, it is an approach to an area in Newport. We brought back background actors to converge the car, then a large crane rises and again. We have actually built what was already there in our visual effects. It’s a piece of the puzzle. ”

The entrance and several of the rooms of the castle presented in the episode come from the Newport Estates, while the living room and the long corridors come from a Long Island manor. “It is a collage that we use to create this feeling of epic castle of a castle, using what we had at our disposal,” said the director. “We used just about all the manor in Newport.”

While Gladys is certainly used to living in a large house, his new one must feel different – and worse.

“It was important to feel as if it enters a very cold and very epic space in which it feels isolated and alone,” said Kampmeier. “We decided to keep gray, to reflect both a feeling of England because we were not in England and to reflect a feeling of this place as well as the inner life of Gladys … Just this gray, isolated and lost girl who is really like a fish out of the water.”

Direct The golden age is “an extravagant experience”, adds Kampmeier, who also directed episode 2 and the next episode 6.

“It is a show where it is very luxurious to be able to create a truly epic shot that will stay in the final cup because the public asks it rather than jumping directly from a close -up,” said Kampmeier, whose other credits include External range, Star Trek: Picard, FBI: International And Tales from The Walking Dead. “I love it.”
