How Josh Giddey, Cam Thomas Decisions Impact Jonathan Kuminga – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

After collectively whistling in the wind for more than two months, the four most notable restricted free agents in the NBA begin to break. Two have withdrawn from a market offering nothing, and neither does Jonathan Kuminga.
The dead end between Kuminga and the Warriors remains precisely that, but they regularly crawl towards the resolution, if only because every minute brings them closer to a deadline of October 1.
The initial reaction to Cam Thomas returning to Brooklyn Nets and Josh Giddey deleting the Bulls of Chicago is to wonder if it has an impact on the Warriors and Kuminga. The answer is, uh, complicated.
Let’s start with Thomas, who swallowed last week and accepted the qualification offer of $ 5.99 million in Brooklyn. Without a market for his services, he would have had three options, according to Shams Charania d’Espn. First, stay with the reconstruction nets for one year at 9.5 million dollars plus incentives that could bring it to around 20 million dollars. Two, re-signing for two years to $ 30 million, with a team option in 2nd year. And Put it on the market next summer, when the market is planning more lucrative.
The Kuminga market was slightly warmer, but not enough to force a Warriors decision. He entered in September against two options. First, accept the eligible offer of Golden State of $ 7.99 million. Two, sign a two -year contract to $ 45 million, with a team option during the 2nd year. He has shown no interest in this.
Kuminga has shown more interest in the qualification offer – which gives it a commercial right of veto and puts it on the market next summer – than the two -year agreement preferred by Golden State which pays more but decreases its lever effect.
A third option could be imminent, but the pay of the Warriors has much less latitude than that of the nets.
The Giddey contract, re-hiring with the reconstruction of Chicago for four years at 100 million dollars, was almost a formality. The Bulls have softened their initial offer (four years, $ 88 million) and Giddey representatives compromised their quest for something in the range of $ 110 to 120 million.
A clear and significant distinction between Kuminga-Warriors and Giddey-Bulls is that only the latter implies parts with a mutual desire. Giddey and the Bulls are considering a future together. Kuminga and the Warriors do not share the same dream.
Another difference is that the mediocre Bulls of the lower eastern conference, are built for years to come. Giddey has been a starter since his season recruited with Oklahoma City and was a 30 -minute starter in his first season in Chicago. He is part of a nucleus that they hope to be able to prosper in two or three years.
The Warriors, on the other hand, operate with an emergency. With a veteran core from Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green – an average of 36.5 years – they do not look beyond the next two seasons.
It is conceivable, even probably, Kuminga stays with the Warriors – just as it seems likely that Quentin Grimes, the fourth FRG, remains with the Philadelphia 76ers. The difference is, once again, there is a mutual interest between the two parties, according to the sources of the league. Philly would seek to lose salary elsewhere to re-sign Grimes.
Aside from the RFA status, Kuminga does not share many parallels with Thomas, dizzy or Grimes. The Warriors will not offer JK the type of contract that the Bulls gave to Giddey, and they do not intend to empty a salary to keep Kuminga, just like the objective of the 76ers.
Kuminga signing the qualification offer remains the expected result. The deadline for doing so is October 1. Meanwhile, Al Horford and the rest of the veterans in the Golden State waiting room plead quietly for more clarity.
