How Diabetes eye tests help prevent diabetic retinopathy

Early diabetic retinopathy can be treated and reversed

Dr. Szirth says that it is often possible to “reverse” the first stages of diabetic retinopathy.

Early diabetic retinopathy generally does not require any special eye treatment. Instead, you will be advised to use a diet, exercise or medication to improve your metabolic risk factors – namely your blood sugar, blood pressure and possibly your cholesterol level.

In simple terms, the first treatment of diabetic retinopathy is good management of diabetes.

“You have two things to do: you need to control your blood sugar, and you need to control your blood pressure. And if you carefully follow the diet, we can bring you back, ”explains Szirth.

Without screening, not all patients will be so lucky and more serious damage can be permanent. “When some parts of the eye die, we cannot go back this,” says Szirth. This is why regular screening and early intervention can be so important. If the eye lesions are detected early, it can be treatable before it worsens.

The targeted treatment for the eyes is generally not recommended to subsequent stages. At this point, you will probably be asked to take complete eye exams as often as every few months to assess the progress of the condition. Ophthalmologists have several treatment options, including laser photocoagulation and antivascular drugs of the endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF).
