Who was released for the Home Run 2025 MLB derby?

The Home Run Derby Field rarely aligns with the Homer classification at the Stars Pause, and 2025 will be no exception. As talented as the field is, some of the other best MLB players refused the event:

  • Aaron judge: The title MVP of Al and the triple Home Run champion won the event in his recruit year in 2017 and have not contributed since, saying that he will not do it again until the game of the stars returns to the Yankee Stadium. He reiterated this position earlier this month.

  • Shohei Ohtani: MLB’s largest international star, who participated in the derby in 2021, said he did not think it was “possible” for him to compete due to the derby format. He is also currently withdrawing as a starting launcher, so the event could be too much to add to his plate.

  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr..

  • Teoscar Hernández: The reigning champion will not defend his title, apparently citing the results of the competition and the fact that he has already missed time due to an injury this year.

  • Kyle Schwarber: The Philadelphia Phillies Voltueur will participate in the star game but will not join the crowd of the derby. “Maybe see what is going on next year,” said Schwarber, third in the NL with 27 circuits.

  • Pete Alonso: The first New York Mets base player, 30, refused an invitation this year, citing the need for rest. The slugger is a home derby participant every season he has taken place since his recruit year. He is a double winner of the event and currently has 20 circuits on the season.

Instead of four clashes in the first round, last year, the eight strikers competed to reach the first four, with a limit of 40 throws over three minutes plus three bonus taken (in which they continue to strike until they fail to strike a homer three times). The strikers were then classified for the semi-final and the last laps, the latter with two minutes and 27 throws.

It was a complicated format, and it is not clear if MLB will use the same rules this year.
