Gerrard has already made a key request from Thelwell at Ibrox as Rangers return approaches

In a new Gers update on Steven Gerrard’s potential arrival at Ibrox, reports now indicate that Teddy Bears chief Kevin Thelwell has been asked to make a slight change to his role at Rangers.
Who could join Gerrard at Rangers?
It seems Gerrard is almost certain to become the next Rangers manager at this point.
The Liverpool legend is reportedly close to reaching a deal and his backroom team is already a talking point in Glasgow. After recognizing the need to rely on its workforce, the Gers could nevertheless welcome new known faces in the coming days.
Recent reports suggest Gary McAllister and Jermain Defoe are likely to join Gerrard in returning to Rangers and the new boss is also keen to bring former England manager Steve Holland to the club. Perhaps in an ideal world for Gerrard personally, Michael Beale would return to his assistant role, but his return to the club would not be as welcome.
Getting it right in every department, from the manager to the rest of his team, should be a top priority for the 49ers.
The last thing they need is to fail twice in their first year in Scotland, having already seen Russell Martin crash and burn.
Gerrard’s arrival should steady the ship after such a disastrous start. But is it enough to keep players like Nicolas Raskin? That’s another question. Recent transfer rumors suggest that Besiktas are ready to save the midfielder as early as January, which would be a first blow for the new manager.
After asking an Ibrox boss to change roles upon his arrival, it’s the type of situation Gerrard will be hoping to avoid.
Steven Gerrard tells Kevin Thelwell to adjust Rangers role
According to talkSPORT, in the run-up to his return, Gerrard has indirectly asked Kevin Thelwell to adjust his role as sporting director, with the new manager demanding a “decisive word” on Rangers’ transfers and recruitment drive.
Although Martin received his fair share of criticism this summer, Thelwell hasn’t exactly had an impressive start to life at Rangers.
The sporting director helped attract up to 14 new faces to Glasgow during the summer transfer window, and it’s difficult to pick a name other than Djeidi Gassama who has made a good start.
Former Rangers ace Kris Boyd admitted as much when Martin’s tenure ended.
“The English championship and the lower leagues failed Rangers. James Tavernier and Connor Goldson came out of that – you can say positives.
“As for the rest, Todd Cantwell was one of the best players in the league, Tom Lawrence was one of the best players in the league, Ben Davies, there were a lot of them. Gassama looks like he’s got something, the rest we haven’t seen yet.”
The big question now is whether Gerrard’s influence will change things on the recruitment front, as Thelwell looks to turn things around after a poor start at Ibrox.
