Gary Stead rubs salt on India injuries with an assertion of “greatest success” on the 3-0 historic 3-0 victory in New Zealand
Former New Zealand coach Gary Stead recalled a 3-0 historical scan in the series of tests against India in difficult subcontinent conditions. Stead, who guided the Black Caps towards the victory of the World Championship of the World Test Test (WTC), described the victory of the series as the greatest success of his mandate.
In October-November 2024, New Zealand became the first team to whiten men in blue in a series of tests of three or more matches in India. They ended the undefeated interior sequence of India since 2012. India then lost the BGT 2024-25 series in Australia and is now on the verge of a serial defeat in England.

Stead admitted that loss of draw during the first test in Bengaluru turned out to be an advantage, because India was overturned for 46 on a green surface. He said Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke took advantage of the conditions, and the strikers won the upper hand once the land has settled.
“We lost the draw for the first test, which was a disguised blessing because we would also have beaten,” said Stead.
“It was a little wet on the top, but it took a single session to put us just on the foot. The way Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke played that day was fantastic. And then we just played.”
“This first test in Bangalore was a little different because the counter was pretty good. Although it pinched early, it flattened, and we probably obtained the best of shot conditions there.”

New Zealand spinners have surpassed India even on locations suitable for Pune and Mumbai. The Black Caps also outperformed the hosts in striker and in the field.
Gary Stead awarded his experience to Sri Lanka for having prepared the team to adapt to the subcontinental conditions. He said that their strategies had played a crucial role in their historic clean scanning.
“I guess we watched it and thought you are winning a test in India, it’s as good as most of the teams are sometimes doing there. But then we really moved our attention to Pune and it was a very, very different counter. We knew that he was going to shoot from the start.”
“But that, and then the match in Mumbai is the place where I think the lessons of Sri Lanka really gave us the opportunity to be really clear about the way we wanted to play.”
New Zealand spinners had a significant impact during the series in India. Mitchell Santner took 13 counters in one Pune test, while Jaz Patel picked 11 counters in Mumbai. Glenn Phillips also contributed to eight major layoffs in the series.
