Chelsea make eight changes, the most notable of which is undoubtedly the first start of striker Marc Guiu in the Premier League.

Guiu was on loan at Sunderland earlier this season and Chelsea are hoping the 19-year-old will help them deal with the prolonged absence of prolific Cole Palmer.

Center back Benoit Badiashile is out until December with a muscle problem, defender Levi Colwill has a long-term knee injury and midfielder Dario Essugo has a hamstring problem.

Right-back Malo Gusto is suspended and the match comes too early for striker Liam Delap, who returned to training following a hamstring injury.

“They showed that they are a very good team,” manager Maresca said of Régis Le Bris’ players. “They play as a team.

“They have the same points as us, so they are showing how good they are. It’s a Premier League game and I don’t think a game at this level is easy.

“I looked [them] since last season, when their manager arrived. They play good football and are quite strong physically, so I really like the way they do things.

“The challenge is always the same: to try to win the match knowing that they want the same thing. They will try to create enough situations and a difficult situation for us.”

Sunderland vs Chelsea line-ups

Sunderland make two changes, bringing in Leipzig loanee Lutsharel Geertruida for his first start for the Black Cats and Reinildo Mandava after the left-back’s three-match suspension ends.

Omar Alderete, who is unavailable due to concussion protocols, and Chris Rigg are out. Winger Romaine Mundle is out with a hamstring problem and defenders Dennis Cirkin (wrist) Leo Hjelde (Achilles) and Aji Alese remain out.

Paraguayan defender Omar Alderete is currently undergoing concussion protocols following a head injury.

“We play at Stamford Bridge and I was a Chelsea fan growing up,” ever-present defender Trai Hume told the Sunderland website.

“It’s been passed down to me through my family, from my grandfather all the way down, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

“We know it will be a tough test and they are a top team with a lot of good players. I will have a lot of family at home and away, but I am looking forward to it all.”
