I was thinking of this post this morning, then I saw someone refer to Bluesky. It is from July 2016 (“it is not the natural state of things”) and notes that not only the world of the last 80 years is not permanent or immutable. It is not even the natural state of things. The world in which we have all grown up, from the end of the 1940s to the last decade, has been the product of very conscious and deliberate decisions taken largely in the United States but also in the capitals of Europe. For all its many imperfections and dissatisfied, it was a period of prosperity and safety essentially unequaled in history.
