Friday’s “snow map”

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — SUMMARY: Many of us have a snow day ahead of us! The first snow of the season arrives Friday morning. Snow totals of 1 to 3 inches will be most common in the ABC13 area.
“THE SNOW MAP”: This is my first snow map for Friday. I will post a review Thursday afternoon before the snow starts.
WEATHER ALERT DAY: The ABC13 Weather Team is issuing a Weather Alert Day for Friday.
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY LIKELY: The NWS is issuing these, and I assume it will be a winter weather advisory. Winter storm warnings are issued for snow totals of 4 inches and above, but I don’t expect that much snow.
SNOW TOTALS 1″ to 3″: Roanoke, Danville and Lynchburg. These forecast totals may be a little high due to the dry air, but that’s what I have for now.
HIGHER TOTALS FOR MOUNTAINS: More than 3″ is possible for mountains. Highest amounts: Southwest Virginia mountains, plus where I draw the highest terrain in Bedford, Amherst and Nelson counties.

SNOW COMES EARLY FRIDAY: Snow starts before sunrise. All locations in the ABC13 area are expected to wake up to snowfall Friday morning.
SNOW FALLS AROUND 9 HOURS: Once the snow begins, the snow will persist until midday Friday. If it was a heavy/wet snowfall, you would expect higher amounts of snow.
“DRY” SNOW: And of course, all snow gets wetter when you ride on it, creating friction/heat.
SNOW INTENSITY: Light to moderate. “Soft.” Light wind.
THE SNOW WILL END Friday afternoon, with a light melt.
SCHOOL IMPACTS: We typically see many school delays of 2 hours during a winter weather advisory. But I think we will see some school cancellations as the snow falls when the morning bus lines would normally be active. Your school will make the best decision!
SPECULATION: I told my wife, Elizabeth, who is a teacher, that she would probably have a snow day on Friday!
These are my thoughts, so you can prepare accordingly. Check back for updates.
