Former Republican vice president was 84

Dick Cheney, considered one of the most influential Republican vice presidents in U.S. history, has died at the age of 84.
Cheney died Monday evening from pneumonia and heart and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family shared with the press.
“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025,” read a statement shared with media, including BBC News. “He was 84 years old.”
“His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other members of his family were with him when he passed. The former vice president died of complications from pneumonia and heart and vascular disease.”
“For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including serving as White House Chief of Staff, Congressman from Wyoming, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States. Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country and to live a life of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all that Dick Cheney did for our country and we are fortunate beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.
The Nebraska-born politician served as chief of staff to President Gerald Ford at the White House in the 1970s, before spending a decade in the House of Representatives. He is best known as George W. Bush’s vice president from 2001 to 2009, and as one of the principal architects of the 2003 invasion of Iraq through Bush’s post-9/11 “war on terror.”
In recent years, Cheney has been a vocal critic of current US President Donald Trump, and months before last year’s presidential election, he supported Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Cheney said there has “never been an individual who posed a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” adding, “He tried to steal the last election by using lies and violence to stay in power after voters rejected him.” »
His daughter Liz Cheney, a former Republican lawmaker, served on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol. She was one of ten Republicans to vote to impeach Trump after the event.
Cheney was portrayed by British actor Christian Bale in the 2018 biopic. Vicewhich earned Bale and co-star Sam Rockwell Oscar nominations, as well as the Best Picture award, in 2019.
