Former Ibrox star names Championship manager who would join Rangers ‘in a heartbeat’

As those at Ibrox continue their search for a new manager, a former Rangers star has told them to go look for a Championship manager who would join the club “in a heartbeat”.

Discussions with Rangers schedule manager

As things stand, it’s Steven Gerrard who tops Rangers’ list of candidates to replace Russell Martin. The former Aston Villa manager is reportedly set to hold talks with the 49ers this week as they consider welcoming him back to Ibrox for the first time since leaving for the Midlands in 2021.

With return negotiations set to be far from straightforward, Gerrard recently admitted he has “unfinished business” in the technical area following failed spells in Saudi Arabia and the Premier League.

“I would love to do it again at some point. I want to change a few things and improve a few things and come back fresh, with a few different people around me.

“I’d love to take on a few more challenges doing this and that’s what I’m working on in the background at the moment. A few different ideas, a few different people around me.

“Now I’m enjoying time with family and doing a lot of things that I haven’t been able to do. But there’s a part of me that still feels like there’s a little unfinished business in terms of wanting to jump in and take on a few more exciting challenges.”

Looking for an opportunity to resume his coaching career, the Rangers job represents an ideal opportunity for Gerrard. He has been there and done that before – winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021 – and there is no doubt that the Gers need a similar transformation to the one he oversaw four years ago.

That said, it’s not the best option for everyone. Instead, according to a former player, Rangers should target an impressive Championship manager.

Ross McCormack: Lampard would join Rangers ‘in a heartbeat’

Speaking on the Open Goal podcast, former Ibrox ace Ross McCormack dumped Frank Lampard when asked who he thinks Rangers should target and claimed the Chelsea legend would leave Coventry for the Gers “in a heartbeat”.

The former striker said: “If you could get me one it would be Lampard, after seeing what he looks like. I think you’re leaving Coventry in a heartbeat to go to Rangers.”

If Lampard were available, it would be difficult to argue with McCormack. The Chelsea legend got his managerial career back on track at Coventry City, who have looked unstoppable in the Championship so far this season – remaining unbeaten after nine games.

The frustrating truth for Rangers fans, however, is that Lampard is unlikely to abandon his current project now that he finds himself in such a promising position. Coventry and former Everton manager aim for Premier League. This is something even the Rangers aren’t likely to disrupt.

Instead, the 49ers might be forced to settle for another legendary English midfielder.
