Bucolic summer holidays are transformed by the tragedy OutsiderThe first feature film by Spanish director Lucía Aleña Iglesias.
The evocative drama, which will be presented in the Discovery section of Tiff for the directors of first and second time, takes place during a vacation tired of the sun in Mallorca.
The first film by Spanish director Lucía Iglesias Outsider evolves around Cata, 16 years old (new Spanish coming Zoe Stein) who, after the sudden loss of his beloved grandmother, enters his role in an attempt to reduce the sorrow of his family.
Cata and her sister Eva (Martina García) spend an carefree summer with their grandparents in Majorca when suddenly their beloved grandmother Catalina (Marta Angelat) dies, and their innocent holidays, as well as this film, takes a tragic turn. The grandfather Tomeu (Lluís Homar) is paralyzed with sorrow. When Cata tries one of her grandmother’s vintage dresses, she finds herself to slip into the role of the emotional guard, living in the role that Catalina played in the family.
In a first exclusive teaser of the film (look below), Cat is held just outside the family home, silently looking at the grandfather Tomeu (played by the legendary Spanish actor Lluís Homar (Broken embraces,, Bad education)).
Iglesias expanded his eponymous short film for this first feature film, which was inspired by both ghost stories and endless summer stories.
“I am interested in the way we project our deceased in places, objects and especially on other people,” the director said in a statement. “Either way or not, sorrow can open us in new and strange ways to keep our loved ones longer. Cat is crying the loss of her grandmother by assimilating his character, getting lost in his mind, or at least in the interpretation of Cat. ”
The project was partially developed through the Critics Week program of the Cannes Film Festival for emerging directors. Outsider will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 8.
