Flights delayed and canceled at San Diego International Airport

The San Diego International Airport website showed a trend of delayed flights Tuesday.

SAN DIEGO — Travelers entering and exiting San Diego International Airport Tuesday evening were hit by several flight delays.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at San Diego International Airport at 8:48 p.m. for departures due to fog and was expected to lift at 11:15 p.m.

As of 8:07 p.m., the airport recorded 78 delayed flights according to FlightAware. The southwest recorded the majority of delays in and out of San Diego. However, several airlines were affected and experienced delays.

Meanwhile, a dense fog advisory was issued by the National Weather Service for the entire coast until 6 a.m. Wednesday due to visibility at times less than a quarter mile or less.

  • Arrive two hours before departure: San Diego International Airport suggests travelers arrive two hours earlier before their flight departs due to potentially longer lines and delays due to increased security measures.
  • Curbside parking is not permitted at the airport, and unattended curbside vehicles will be ticketed and may be towed.
  • Have ID and tickets ready: Passengers with tickets and photo ID will be allowed through security to the boarding area. Those embarking on a trip without a ticket must carry printed proof of their ticket purchases. This could include a printed itinerary. They can also check in at the counter.
  • For safety-related travel tips, including check-in updates, lists of prohibited and permitted items and other important information, people can tune to 4:90 p.m. on their radio or check the San Diego International Airport website for the latest information.

Next steps if your flight is delayed or canceled

According to the Ministry of Transportation, airlines are required to promptly provide passengers with information about a change in the status of their flight.

If the flight is scheduled to depart within seven days, airlines are required to provide status updates 30 minutes or sooner after being notified of the status change. At a minimum, flight status information should be available on the airline’s website and through the airline’s telephone reservation system.

Travelers can visit the San Diego International Airport Flight Status page to check the status of their flights in real time. Alternatively, people can also use FlightAware to track any delays or cancellations.

The DoT has a dashboard showing the services provided by each airline to reduce inconvenience to travelers when the circumstances causing the cancellation or delay are within the airline’s control. A green check mark on the dashboard means that the airline is committed to providing this service or convenience to its customers. A red “x” means that the airline has not made this commitment, but may provide these services or amenities in certain cases at its discretion.
