Flight Delta forced to make an emergency landing for an increasingly common reason
An Atlanta delta flight at Fort Lauderdale International Airport made an emergency landing on Monday after a fire on board. A spokesperson for Delta Airlines said that the portable battery of a passenger had caught fire, causing the flight 1334 of the landing in Fort Meyers, Florida.
On -board agents have extinguished the fire, but the residual smoke of the flames remained on the plane, pushing an emergency decision and diverting the flight since its planned destination.
“”We appreciate the rapid work and the actions of our people to follow their training, and we apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels, “said a spokesperson for Delta Airlines in a statement to CBS News.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the number of lithium battery fires on American flights increased from 388% from 2015 to 2024, which now occurs almost twice a week. There were 34 incidents involving lithium batteries this year only, on average six per month.
Southwest Airlines implemented a new rule on May 28, forcing passengers to use batteries and portable chargers at sight. The airline said that the load devices will not be allowed in the bins or air bags. It is a safety measure to allow crew members of rapid and effective responses to potential fires.
Most airlines and transportation security administration will authorize electricity banks in hand luggage, but not in checkered luggage.
“Lithium batteries fuel everything, vapes and mobile phones with cameras and electricity banks. If they become defective or damaged, they can cause intense fire that is difficult to turn off – both in the cabin or to hold an airplane,” said Glenn Bradley, head of flight operations at Civil Aviation Authority.
