Film study: Julian Sayin continued to develop as Illinois enjoyed (some) success stretching Ohio State’s defense

Over the first few weeks of this season, Matt Patricia’s defense has been the most interesting part of the Sunday morning taping sessions here at Film Study HQ. The last two weeks have been different, however. Not because of anything Caleb Downs, Arvell Reese and co. did, but rather thanks to the development of young Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin.

The redshirt freshman continues to put great reps on tape, even when he’s not pushing the ball downfield. According to PFF, Sayin was the highest-rated Buckeye against the Illini despite throwing for just 166 yards. Although his performance didn’t have the big game that many fans dreamed of, his efficiency and ability to progress was impressive for a player making his sixth career start.

Here’s what we review in this week’s video:

  • The problems in Ohio State’s running game went beyond just the number of boxes

  • Sayin worked until his fourth play on Bo Jackson’s touchdown

  • Illinois attacked OSU zones with super spread formations

  • Matt Patricia responded with a pressure that ultimately sealed the victory
