Cannes 2025: The cinema of “sentimental value” of Joachim sort on cinema

Ahhhh yes the great majesty of the beautiful and beautiful cinema. There is nothing like leaving the theater that has just seen a masterpiece. My tweet on dance in the streets of Sundance after emerging from Call me by name In 2017, became a part of the history of cinema after Luca Guadagnino spoke of the way it brought him so much joy that evening. It is the same feeling that I have after having emerged from the film Sentimental value At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. One of the handles of the first finals at the end of the festival, Sentimental value So far, the sixth feature film by Norwegian director Joachim Trier. His films have been playing Cannes since 2011, with Oslo, August 31 (I distinctly remember having looked at this at the festival at the time and not being a big fan). His films undoubtedly belong here to Cannes and he goes up to new heights – it could be his best film to date. As a major follow -up of the 2021 The worst person in the world (my review), Sentimental value is a story of a filmmaker who plans a new film in Oslo while trying to reconnect with her two daughters. Before watching it, I was not sure that a movie on cinema could be This Well, but it’s really an instant classic. A fully excited cinema on cinema.
Sentimental valuealso known as Affection value Originally in Norwegian, is co-written by Joachim Trier And his longtime collaborator Vogt eskil. Together, they designed a deeply affecting and captivating story about the family and reconciliation and the real, TRUE cinema power. Trier reinstalls with the Norwegian actress oh so charming and talented Reintegrate (Since The worst person in the world) Who plays Nora Berg, one of the daughters of filmmaker Gustav Borg, co-star Stellan Skarsgård in this massively important role. There are obvious references to Ingmar Bergman everywhere, especially that the name of this famous director “Gustav Borg” immediately resembles at a nod to Bergman. Sorting also presents another wonderful Norwegian actress named Inga ibsdotter Lilleaas As the other girl Agnes, and everyone is going to talk about her now as much as they were talking about Renate after having rocked the world with The worst person in the world In 2021. After 15 years to do nothing again, the selfish filmmaker Maestro Gustav finally wrote a new scenario, and he must take place in the same house he grew up. He wants his own daughter Nora to play there, but she refuses, so he decides to launch the famous American actress Rachel Kemp (played perfectly by She Fanning) instead. Many challenges and a lot of contemplation ensue.
This is the one we were waiting for in Cannes this year! What a magnificent film. This is the genre that lets you float after the end. It leaves you with a big smile on your face. It makes you want to start dancing in the streets after because it’s so good God (and the songs he chooses are SO danceable). It is exceptionally intelligent cinema to sort on how cinema can really heal us and change us, even if sometimes I was not sure of the way it was leaning. This fractured family is in difficulty, each dealing with depression and concerns and frustrations. There is a moment where it seems almost that sorting says that relying on cinema as a form of therapy is not good, and we must rather spend really real It is time with each other and work on the connection in real life with real conversations. However, as the film continues, it turns into something deeper and philosophical as a comment on art seriously having the power to bring us together in its curious way. It is beautifully tender, happy, healthy and masterful in all directions and in each scene. He wants to let us think of much more than what we have shown in these scenes. He wants to leave us with this feeling that bright cinema will remain with us long after the roll of credits. This is where his true power resides, this is how he can affect us and change us for the best. Let it wash you.
I also like how light and charming it is – the partition of the composer Hania Rani is incredible (she also did the partition to The summer book). The soundtrack of songs everywhere is perfect (my favorite is “Cannock Chase” by Labi Siffre). It’s what all Cinema should aspire to be. This is what the film can be during a real director of master who only improves because he continues to do more. I am so happy that it is as exceptional and this movement. Better yet, this film deepens and adds even more diapers The worst person in the world Act as a meta commentary on how this film has mean for so many people. Although this new film is also a magnificent work of its own saying that yes, cinema means everything and can shape us. Bright stuff. This complex father tries to reconcile with his daughters in the only way he knows – making a film about his family. And that takes us on this trip, never feeling heavy or too sentimental in any scene, showing us rather the true power of reconnection and art, and to be honest in all ways you know how. “”Tenderness is the new punk“Trier said at the Cannes press conference. Yes.” I must believe that we can see the other, that there is a feeling of reconciliation. “And this film shows us the way.
